Baby John is an adaptation, not a Theri remake: clarifies Varun Dhawan

Actor Varun Dhawan has clarified that his upcoming film, Baby John, is an adaptation of the 2016 Tamil blockbuster Theri, and not a direct remake. Directed by Kalees and produced by Atlee, the film is slated for a December 25 release. Dhawan emphasized during a press event that Baby John features significant changes to its storyline and structure compared to the original.

“When Atlee came with this film, there was a reason behind it,” Dhawan explained. “He said we had to change a lot of the geography and use it as an adaptation, not a proper remake. I think that's what’s been done.” He added that audiences expecting a frame-by-frame recreation of Theri might be disappointed as Baby John offers a distinct narrative.

The film addresses contemporary themes, such as parenting and women’s safety in India, while incorporating elements inspired by real-life events. Dhawan revealed, “There’s a case inspired by some real events, and that’s woven into the story. The role has also been reimagined from that perspective.”

Baby John stars Varun Dhawan in a rugged avatar and features an ensemble cast, including Jackie Shroff, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. Special appearances by Salman Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Sanya Malhotra are expected to add to the film’s appeal. The trailer, already making waves, showcases high-octane action sequences and emotional moments, promising a gripping cinematic experience.

The 2016 film Theri, directed by Atlee and starring Thalapathy Vijay, was a critical and commercial success, known for its impactful storytelling and action. While Baby John borrows key elements from Theri, Dhawan reiterated that the Bollywood adaptation reimagines the narrative for a broader audience, ensuring it resonates with contemporary societal issues.

With the release date drawing closer, expectations for Baby John are running high. The film aims to deliver a compelling mix of action, drama, and meaningful storytelling, making it one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases this holiday season.
